If you’re a fan of smoothies you’ll definitely fall in love with smoothie bowls. Picture a velvety smoothie that you can enjoy with a spoon. It’s akin to a take on sorbet but more satisfying topped with your treats, like granola, seeds and fresh fruits. Additionally having it in a bowl gives it that comforting feeling of a meal of just a beverage.

Essentials for a Perfect Smoothie Bowl

When it comes to making smoothie bowls you have the freedom to get creative with your ingredients. However if you’re aiming for a texture it’s essential to include;

  • Fruits & Berries: Fresh or frozen, your choice!
  • Sweetener: Ripe banana or a splash of maple syrup.
  • Creaminess: Oats, nut butter, or banana.
  • Protein & Creaminess: Plant-based milk and yogurt.

Pro tip: Frozen fruit, like bananas,is your best friend for a creamy, refreshing bowl I always freeze ripe bananas before they go bad or use them in a banana bread recipe.

During the routine of life it’s important to have a breakfast that is fast, nutritious and tasty. These smoothie bowls perfectly meet all those criteria. You can whip up a range of options, with these 10 simple ingredients;

Bananas

Nut butter

Mango

Berries

Baby spinach

Soy yogurt

Plant milk

Cocoa

Oranges

Avocado

1. Yellow Smoothie Bowl: Mango & Orange

There are no bananas in this bowl! The sweetness comes from mango and orange while almond butter and soy yogurt give it a texture. Add slices of yellow kiwi on top for a pop of color.

2. Red Smoothie Bowl: Berry Blast

This vibrant bowl is a visual delight. Frozen berries are a staple in my kitchen, making this a go-to recipe. For a creamy texture, blend in a banana and some soy yogurt. Top with fresh berries for that final touch.

3. Chocolate Smoothie Bowl: Banana & Cocoa

Chocolate lovers, this one’s for you! Blend ripe banana with cocoa powder for a rich, chocolatey base. Almond butter adds creaminess, while a sprinkle of cocoa nibs and hazelnuts on top makes this bowl irresistible.

4. Green Smoothie Bowl: Spinach & Mango

My personal favorite! The bright green color comes from baby spinach, balanced by the sweetness of mango. Avocado and almond butter make it extra creamy. A hint of fresh ginger adds a zesty kick, and green kiwi makes a perfect topping.

5. Blue Smoothie Bowl: Blueberry Bliss

For a true blue hue, blend frozen blueberries (or use blue spirulina powder for a brighter color). This bowl is as tasty as it is beautiful, with a smooth, creamy texture and a sprinkle of fresh blueberries on top.

How to Make Your Smoothie Bowl in 3 Simple Steps

1. Prep Your Ingredients: Get ready by peeling, chopping and preparing all the ingredients. For the texture it’s great to use a combination of fresh fruits.

2. Blend Until Smooth: Put all the ingredients in a blender. Blend for 2 to 4 minutes until you achieve a texture. Remember to pause and scrape down the sides if necessary.

3. Top & Serve: Transfer your smoothie into a bowl. Get creative with toppings. Add fruits, nuts, seeds, granola and anything else you like. Enjoy the texture and taste.

Toppings to Elevate Your Smoothie Bowl

Smoothie bowls are truly delightful because of the toppings they can be adorned with. Here are some topping suggestions to enhance your experience;

  • Oats & Granola: Adds crunch and fiber.
  • Fresh Fruit & Berries: For a juicy, sweet bite.
  • Seeds & Nuts: Chia seeds, flaxseeds, almonds, or hazelnuts for a nutrient boost.
  • Coconut Flakes & Cocoa Nibs: For a tropical or chocolatey touch.
Tips for Preparing Smoothie Bowls Ahead of Time

When mornings get busy you can prepare your smoothie bowls in advance. Simply. Refrigerate your bowl for up, to a day though its most delicious when enjoyed fresh. Alternatively freeze your fruits in portions so that all you have to do in the morning is blend them with your liquid. A chilled smoothie bowl is particularly invigorating on days.

The first bowl in the lineup is a yellow variant that excludes banana. It highlights the fruity flavors of mango and orange, with almond butter and soy yogurt adding a creamy texture to perfectly round out the taste

In this version my favorite toppings are oranges ( blood oranges) and yellow kiwi.

Visually, the red smoothie bowl is simply unbeatable. It is also one of the most common things I make on a daily basis, as I usually have plenty of frozen berries in my freezer.
